Classroom Procedures

The following procedures will help us, all members of the class, to work more effectively. We will together especially at the beginning of the school year practicing these procedures, so they become a routine that will enhance our productivity in the classroom.

* Entering the room:
Enter the classroom quietly, use the door that says “ENTRADA – ENTRANCE”; leave the schoolbags on the right side of the room next to the cubbies, and set your Spanish materials on the table.
This procedure lets the students know what is expected of them when they enter the classroom. Taking advantage of our time together is very important.

* Planner use:
Once you are at your desk, open your planner and write down the assignments that are written on the board, making sure to also note the date it is due. You will be given two minutes to complete your planner. If there is no assignment, quiz, or test written on the board, proceed with the sponge activity.
Keeping a planner is a very useful tool. It not only helps students stay organized but also reminds them of their impending responsibilities. As humans we tend to forget if we do not write things down. A planner helps students make sure they do their best at school by being on top of every assignment.

* Sponge "ESPONJA" activity:
After you have written your assignments in the planner, the next thing you must do is work on your sponge- "ESPONJA" activity. Each student must complete the "ESPONJA" activity independently, which is considered a warm-up activity that leads into the actual class. All sponges should go to the left side of the notebook. Be sure to write: “ESPONJA #” on the first line, the Date in Spanish on the second line, and then what the sponge activity is about on the third line. The "ESPONJA" could be reflection questions, trivia questions, worksheets, puzzles…etc. You will have approximately three to five minutes to complete the "ESPONJA" activity, depending upon what other projects you have to do. Since this is a warm-up activity, we will use the answers during class.

Sponge activities will be used to utilize instruction time in a effective way, and also as a transitional piece.

* Prayer:
A timer will be set for three to five minutes, depending upon the sponge activity. As soon as you hear the bell, you must stop working on your sponge activity and quietly stand up. (Push your chair in and stand behind your chair.) After I say “intenciones, which means “intentions,” please raise your hand if have an intention to offer. After our intentions have been stated, we will offer our prayer to all those intentions. We will pray an Our Father, The Hail Mary, and the Sign of the Cross.
In the classroom we pray – to thank God for another day, for those in need, and to reflect and thank God for all the blessings that He has given us. By praying as a community, we not only share our afflictions and worries with others, but we also offer them our support and understanding when needed. Prayer brings us together as a family.

* Quiz taking:
After the prayer, if there is a quiz scheduled, please put everything away except for a sheet of paper and your pencil. You must put a heading on your paper (look at procedure “heading”) and place the title in the center of the paper: LECCION / QUIZ unit #. Example:

Lección / Quiz – Unit 1

* Paper distribution:
When papers are distributed (vocabulary sheets, worksheets), the student sitting in the first desk of each row will receive a stack. This student will then take a paper and pass the remainder of the sheets to the person behind them. Each student in the row will then do the same. When papers are to be collected, students will then pass their papers forward to the person in front of them. The teacher will collect the papers from the student sitting in the beginning of each row. If the classroom is set up in clusters, each cluster will be provided with the correct amount of papers, which will be placed in the middle of the table for students to pick up. The same procedure will be used for work that is to be collected i.e., each cluster must place their papers in the middle of the table for the teacher to collect.
Having a procedure for distributing and collecting papers will definitely be a time-saver. It allows the classroom to be better organized and more efficient. It also eliminates the need to have students walking around the classroom, handing out papers.

* Raise hand before speaking:
Students wishing to speak must first raise their hand. If more than one student raises their hand, I will assign a number to each student, e.g., 1, 2, 3, etc... .
This procedure will make clear the guideline to use for speaking, which will create a better environment for communication, where one person speaks and the others listen. We practice respect for others by staying quiet and listening attentively.

* Do not talk while the teacher or another student is speaking.

* Everybody’s attention:
After a group activity or when the class gets too noisy. I will ring the bell/horn and clap once, which means that I need everyone’s attention and that all students should be respectful and quiet. Students in response will clap twice and the class will be quiet automatically. Consequences from the misbehavior box will be applied to those students who do not follow procedures. This procedure will bring everyone’s attention back to work at once without wasting time.

* Headings on papers:
All papers must have a heading on the top left corner

The headings on papers are an important source of information. They not only allow students and teachers to keep track of the date, but they make distributing the papers easier because they clearly state the person’s name at the top of the sheet. This saves the teacher from having to track down any anonymous work that was submitted.

* Submitting paper:
Papers that are submitted to the teacher should be clean and without ragged edges. Presentation and neatness should always be taken into consideration as part of the quality of your work.
All papers should have the title of the assignment on the top line of the paper, including the page numbers of the exercises that come from the textbook.

* Work will be written in blue or black ink and in cursive:
This is very important because when students use other colors of ink, it is really difficult to read the content of an assignment. Also writing in cursive is one of the school’s policies.

* Homework:
When there is homework assigned, it will be due at the beginning of class. You need to have it on the top corner of your desk ready to be picked up. When you are working on your sponge activity, the homework will be collected or checked.

* Tardy to class:If a student is late to class, he/she must bring in a note from a teacher or administration personnel in order to enter the room. The student will also sign in to class by writing down on a paper the date, the time he/she came in to the classroom, and the reason for being late. If the student does not a have a note from a teacher or the office, he/she will get a demerit for being late.* Restroom use:
Ask in Spanish “¿puedo ir al baño? when possible. If the teacher is explaining something important, raise your hand, showing two fingers, to signal that you need to use the restroom. I will then show one finger pointing to the door, to signal that you have permission to go. Once you are given permission to go to the restroom, follow the procedure for leaving the room.
Students are encouraged to ask in Spanish when they need to go to the restroom. This allows them to practice Spanish in their daily conversations. Signaling with the fingers to ask and grant permission to go to the bathroom is less disruptive to the rest of the class, especially when someone else is speaking.

* Leaving the room:
When you need to leave the room to go to the bathroom, office, library, first ask for permission; making sure to sign out by writing the date, your first and last name, the reason for leaving the room, and the exact time you are leaving the room. On your way back, make sure to sign in by writing the time you came back to the room.
This procedure not only helps me keep track of where my students are when they are not in the classroom, it also lets me know which ones are frequently going to the restroom. Also, if a problem arises in the bathroom, I can easily check my record to see who was there at the time. This information may also prove to be beneficial during conferences, because it is a record that gives exact and specific information.

* Dismissal:
The teacher dismisses the class, not the bell. You will be given two minutes to pack up and make sure the room is left clean and organized. You need to make sure that your work area is clean and there are no papers or garbage on the floor. Once you hear the school bell, and the teacher saying, “chao chicos,” you can proceed to leave the room by using the door that is next to the cubbies and that says “SALIDA – EXIT”.
VERY IMPORTANT PROCEDURE: If for some reason you forget something in the Spanish classroom, you are more than welcome to come in and get it if I do not have another class. If you see that I am teaching and that there are students in the classroom, you will have to come at another time.
This procedure is very important, because that way we can assure that no one disrupts the class during the learning process.
